Columbia University
New York, New York, USA
Live and online options (hybrid) July 27-28, 2021
Plus recorded on-demand access through Dec. 28, 2021

This two-day live course will take place in New York City, NY, in the days preceding the American Academy of Dermatology’s Summer Meeting, with Internet option (hybrid), plus on-demand post-meeting viewing. The Summit will provide clinical and scientific education on Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors, and treatment options of alopecia areata to practicing clinicians. Topics will include new and previous modalities, as well as efficacy, safety and side effects of each modality, to improve patient outcomes through effective personalized treatment plans.

Learning objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, attendees should be able to:

  • Explain the JAK signaling pathway and the mechanism of action of JAK inhibitors on alopecia areata, including the immune response and effects on T cell populations.
  • Understand the landscape of JAK inhibitors, specifically, differentiate between JAK 1, 2, 3 and Tyk2, and list the FDA-approved JAK inhibitors, including their type(s) with their indications.
  • Discuss current clinical trials with JAK inhibitors for the treatment of alopecia areata.
  • Discuss the current research in genetics including results of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and associations with related autoimmune diseases.
  • Evaluate the classical treatments of alopecia areata, as well as JAK inhibitors, including an understanding of efficacy, safety, side-effects and risk/benefit of each modality.
  • Review the treatment of alopecia areata in specific body sites, such as eyebrows and eyelashes, beard, and nails.
  • Design a personalized first and second line treatment plan for alopecia areata patients.

National and International Hair-related Meetings

Society & International Meetings: The American Hair Research Society (AHRS) meets twice yearly at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Society for Investigative Dermatology. Beginning in 2018, the AHRS added to its schedule to meet annually in Central or South America at CILAD, RADLA, or similar. The AHRS also holds an ancillary meeting at the time of the World Congress of Dermatology.

At the AHRS meeting associated with the AAD, one or two keynote speakers present their work on hair-associated topics at the annual luncheon, traditionally held on Fridays from noon-2 pm. This is a time to meet with colleagues and exchange ideas for future collaboration, especially in the clinical research realm.

At the AHRS annual meeting associated with the SID, generally held on Friday evening, a keynote speaker will give a lecture and individual short presentations will be given as well, primarily by AHRS members. This meeting will emphasize cutting edge research on basic hair biology and on hair and scalp disorders and provide a forum for an active exchange of ideas. The goal of this meeting is to provide a relatively informal setting for presentation of data and exchange of ideas. This meeting is also where official AHRS business takes place including election of officers and Board members.

The AHRS also interfaces with other international hair research societies (e.g., European, Australasian, Korean, and Japanese) and organizes the World Congress for Hair Research every several years on a rotating basis. This is the largest and most respected hair research meeting in the scientific community, with proceedings subsequently published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
